What is answer engine optimisation?

Published 20 September 2026. Last checked 20 September 2026.Answer engine optimisation is writing and structuring a website so that AI answer systems can read it, quote it and identify the business behind it. It overlaps with search engine optimisation but optimises for a different outcome: being named in an answer rather than ranked in a list of links.

The difference from SEO, in one line

SEO competes for a position. AEO competes to be the sentence.

What is observably different about it

  1. The passage matters more than the page. Answer systems lift a passage, not a document. A page that answers its own title question in its first forty words is quotable; a page that arrives at the answer in paragraph six is not.

  2. Structure is read, not just rendered. Headings that are real questions, lists where the content is a list, tables where it is a comparison, and one idea per paragraph all make a page extractable.

  3. Explicit beats implied. “September 2026” rather than “recently”. “796 companies” rather than “hundreds”. A system cannot quote a figure you have not written down.

  4. The entity has to be pinnable. A system names businesses it can describe confidently. Legal name, location, what is sold, to whom, and which public registers carry the business — stated in prose and mirrored in structured data.

  5. Machines have to be allowed in. An answer system that cannot fetch a page cannot cite it. Most blocks are accidental, in a CDN or firewall rule rather than in robots.txt.

  6. Independent sources carry further than your own. What a register, a directory or a third-party page says about a business weighs more than what the business says about itself.

What does not appear to work

Keyword density. Adjectives. Volume of thin pages. Anything phrased as a claim rather than a checkable fact — the systems quote what can be verified and pass over what cannot.

AEO, GEO, LLM SEO

Three names for substantially the same practice. Answer engine optimisation is the term with the clearest meaning, because it names the thing being optimised for. Generative engine optimisation and LLM SEO describe the same work → LLM SEO

How to tell whether it is working

Measure the answers, not the site. Ask the systems your buyers’ questions on a fixed set of conditions, record who gets named, repeat at a fixed cadence, and compare. Anything else is inference → what is AI visibility

The measurement itself is the AI Visibility Audit, and the machine-readability half is covered by the free website health check.

It overlaps. Both want a site to be crawlable, fast and clear. AEO adds a demand SEO does not make: that a specific passage be liftable as an answer, and that the business behind it be identifiable as an entity.

No. Almost everything AEO asks for also helps in search.

It makes the business easier to describe, which appears to matter. Nobody outside these companies knows the mechanism, and any supplier claiming to is guessing.

Observed citation lag in newly-formed categories is weeks rather than years — a page published in July has been cited across several systems by September. In established categories it is slower.
