What does UK CertifID actually prove?

It proves that the provider displaying it has been certified to verify identities to a published standard. It does not prove anything about the businesses that provider has checked, and it is not a mark a trading business earns.
What it is
A trust mark owned by government and awarded to certified providers of digital verification services, displayed with a unique number that resolves to an entry on the public register of those providers. It sits alongside the identity verification requirements introduced for Companies House, which require the identity of a named person to be verified.
What it proves
That the provider displaying the mark has been certified against the framework, and that the number on the mark resolves to a live register entry. Both are checkable in seconds, which is the point of it.
What it does not prove
Not that a business is real or well run. It certifies the verifier, not the businesses verified.
Not that an identity check covers the company. Verifying that a named individual is who they say they are is a different question from whether the company they direct is what it presents itself to be.
Not that a website, a domain or a company record are consistent. Identity verification does not look at any of these.
Not that a business is contactable, or that its published details are current.
What a buyer still has to check
After an identity verification, the questions a procurement or finance reader is left with are unchanged:
Does the trading name on the invoice resolve to the legal entity on the contract?
Does the registered office on the website match the register, and what does that address tell you?
Can the domain sending payment instructions be impersonated?
Are the accreditations in the pitch deck current on the registers that issued them?
Is the published telephone number answered?
None of these is covered by an identity check, and all of them are answerable from public sources → the Supplier Check
Where Digital Trust Audit sits
Digital Trust Audit is a private certification scheme. It is not a statutory scheme, it carries no government endorsement, and it is not connected to UK CertifID or the trust framework.
The two do not compete. UK CertifID certifies the providers who verify identities. This body reads what a business publishes and reconciles it against what the public record says → the published standard
